Gay men make the best friends: Mugdha Godse

Mugdha Godse, beautiful, sexy but still a mystery. There's a lot we don't know about Madhur Bhandarkar's new find. Over a telephonic conversation, we tried to uncover a few facts about this Fashion actress. Read on...

All of a sudden we hear so much about Mugdha Godse. So where did Mugdha really come from?

I came from Pune. I was born and brought up there.

But where were you before you came into acting?

Before acting, I did some modelling. Actually I did modelling for five years when I was in college. I also used to do these odd jobs for pocket money.

So, how did Madhur Bhandarkar spot you?

I happened to meet Madhur while he was researching for his film Fashion. Actually, I was doing this jewellery campaign and coincidentally, Madhur was the director for that ad film. So one day he just called me and asked me whether I wanted to act...Since it was from Madhur Bhandarkar, I knew it couldn't be a joke. It had to be serious and important. So I told him, 'Listen, but I have never acted in my life.' And he was like, 'Don't worry. Leave the acting to me.' And so I did!(Though many from the industry might choose to differ from this particular version of her meeting the director, this is what she told us. So moving on...)

You have been a model yourself. So was acting in Fashion really similar to your life?

The model I play in Fashion is very different. As in the role is very different. She, Janet, my character is not successful. I was very successful as a model. (Ahem!) This girl has a very different mindset. She is 'been there done that' kind of a female. Janet is definitely a different person from Mugdha.

So what is Fashion all about?

According to me the movie is an emotional journey of facts. It talks about the emotions of models in every stage of their career. You know, you might even come out crying from the theatre after watching the film. It's that emotional.

There's only one man in Fashion, Arjan Bajwa. And even he is paired with Priyanka Chopra. Do you miss not having a man opposite you in your very first movie?

I don't feel bad about that at all. And I do have kind of a pairing with Samir Toni in the film. He plays a gay guy. I am happy with that.

Talking about gay men, they say that the Fashion industry has many of them around. What do you think about that?

Actually in the glamour industry everything is exposed. Even if there's actually very few people with different sexual preferences in the industry, it will be exaggerated and made out to look like the entire industry is full of them. Personally, I believe that creative people are a little different. They might have different sexualities. Actually I feel that gay men make the best friends.

Tell us how it was working with Madhur Bhandarkar.

It was great. Madhur Bhandarkar is a genius. I am left with no words when it comes to describing him. In spite of tension on the sets or generally while making the film, he would remain calm and chilled. He made it really comfortable for us to work on the sets. He would crack jokes and keep a light and comfortable environment for us to work in.

Don't you think there's a mismatch then between him and the kind of films he makes...

Yeah that's the funny part. He's such a humorous person. And his films are all so serious. Actually the first time we met, first thing he cracked a joke. It was very funny.

And what about working with two other women, any catfights?

It was very very comfortable. There were absolutely no catfights. I think men fight more. Women bond. WE would talk about what to wear and accessories and this and that. We bonded really well on the sets. I feel like I've made two really good friends.

Moving on, do you think that your role in Fashion has justified your talent?

Yes definitely. I feel it has captured more than I knew I was capable of. I did not know I had so much talent. I saw the film and thought, 'Dude, is that really me?'

But don't you feel that after Fashion you might get stereotyped as the girl in skimpy clothes rather than being an actress?

You just wait and watch. There's a lot more to my character than the clothes. You will then get to know what a model really is. Nobody will be able to typecast me.

How open are you to steamy scenes?

It depends. You have to do what the story and the director demands. You have to make it look real. After all it's your job.

So what plans about the future?

More and more films. There's a few in the pipeline. I have signed some as well.

Anybody specific you want to work with?

I want to work with everyone. I would love to work with the batch of newcomers. I loved Ranbir and Imran and Neil. I loved Harman too. Not only because he's a friend. I really liked his work in Love Story 2050. And, of course, who doesn't want to work with the Khans?

You know men find you really sexy. How does it feel?

It feels good. I don't find myself hot. I used to laugh at people who called me hot and sexy.

OK. Lastly, I'm sure men out there would love to know whether you are single or taken...

Well, I am not seeing anybody right now. But nobody out there has any chance. I am very choosy. (laughs) Right now, work is my boyfriend.
